Mastering The Fluid Beauty

Words: Hollie Scorer

As part of today’s gender neutral crusade, we’re seeing a rising acceptance of beauty looks being fully embraced regardless of a person’s gender and identity. Social media has helped eliminate the stigmatisation of a non-binary approach to beauty. Some of today’s most prevalent beauty influencers are male, including Jeffree Star and James Charles, who proudly exhibit a number of looks and offer honest advice openly to all members of the beauty community.

Androgynous beauty

There are no rules or boundaries when it comes to mastering androgynous beauty, it has been endured and adored by the fashion and beauty industries for several years.  However, we are seeing a shift toward looks that defy the concept of gender all together as opposed to looks that simply involve one gender stereotype borrowing ideas from another.

Here at AKIN we’ve reveal how to create a gender fluid look that keeps it fresh and minimal, think Glossier-esque enhancing the natural beauty of your unique features. Explore flawless skin that exudes a natural glow and a sumptuously neutral colour palette for the cheek and lips.

The break-down

Youthful skin:

Simple, timeless and universally flattering, the bare skin look is easy to achieve and essential for any fresh daytime look. Opt for a breathable minimal to medium coverage foundation, apply thinly allowing for the natural glow and texture of your skin to shine through.  Use a fine loose powder to keep t-zone oil to a minimum, but use sparingly to maintain a desirable, dewy result. A poorly kept secret in the beauty community is of course the power of faux freckles. Select your favourite eyebrow pencil, (ensuring it’s fully sharpened for precision) and gently dot on freckles across the nose and onto the cheeks- the more scattered and randomly dispersed the better.

Les beiges:

An ever-cool beige colour palette is an essential weapon for any understated makeup look. A warm brown shade can be swept across the cheek for a tasteful twist that radiates sophistication. A medium matte taupe shade is preferable for the eyes, to carve out the crease and create a seamless, natural contour. Whether you prefer matte or gloss on the lips, its critical to select a shade that compliments your complexion - medium golden beige lip colours look stunning against deep skin-tones. We recommend a medium brown with brick-red undertones for light to medium cool complexions. For warmer skin-tones a paler ‘greige’ shade looks incredible paired with this look.

Enviable brows:

It’s no secret that the full, textured brows trend is here to stay for 2019. If you naturally possess thick, fluffy brows then luckily the only tool you’re going to need is a high quality brow gel to effortlessly tame any strays. However, if you weren’t graced with the fullest brows or perhaps have sparse areas, then there’s no need for despair. Lightly fill in sparse areas with a brow pencil one shade lighter than your hair colour for beautifully natural definition. Concentrate on the arch and the end of the brow, leaving the front, bare. Opt for either an angled eyeliner brush or fine-felt tip brow pen to create hair strokes at the front of the brow. In accordance with the rest of the look, the most unkempt and imperfect the look, the better as this creates a level of authenticity.

Hypnotic eyes:

To create a truly striking yet minimal eye look, reach for a mascara that separates and lengthens lashes simultaneously, if a high pigment black is too intense for your daytime look then a brown mascara also works well here. Layering beige matte shadows, concentrating medium shades on the outer corner and lighter shades across the lid creates dimension to the eyes yet projects a natural and classic beauty. For maximum impact, add a clear eye gloss across the lid adding the perfect ultra-modern twist.
